- St. Finan is the patron saint of Kinnitty. His monastery was situated on the confines of the ancient territories of Eile and Ferceal. Colgan treating of the saints of the name Finan writes:- The Third (Finan) was Fionan Cam, abbot of Ceann Eitigh as appears from his life at April 7th. Since that monastery is situated in the same territory as that of Durrow it is evident that this Finan is the same as is mentioned by Adamnan as having led a hermit's life in that locality for many years.No remains of any religious edifice exist at present at Kinnitty; it is thought the Parish Church (Protestant) occupies the site of the ancient monastery. There is no ancient inscription in Churchyard to furnish a clue to the antiquity of the place. One headstone is
pointed out with some ornamental carving thereon and is regarded (traditionally) as of ancient date. St. Finan's day is not even remembered; and a well formerly in the village - Tobar Fhionain - is now closed up.The Abbey of St. Finan existed up to the X11 century; the Canons Regular of St. Augustine succeeded and continued in possession till the general Suppression.(continues on next page)
