  1. In the olden days when the custom "of stealing wives" was rife in Ireland, three sisters, McDiarmuid by name, lived in Bulduff.
    A man named Mick Whelan resolved to steal the oldest girl (though she was the least pretty) to get into her farm. The punishment for this act was twenty years imprisonment if the girl was "wise" enough to banish him.
    Instead she married him. He got the farm and they lived with the family for some time.
