    'Hedge-Schools'
    Why were those schools called 'Hedge-Schools'. Were they not like the Irish National Schools of the present day? The answer is 'no'. Those schools were conducted in the open air and they teacher was forbidden by law to do such a thing as teach. If he was caught in the act of teaching, severe penalties were imposed on him.
    There is a hill called 'The Knock' some miles from my home, and long ago a school was conducted at the base of this hill. It thus earned its name - The Knock Hedge-School. The teachers name at
