- Clonooney Castle.
This castle is situated about a quarter of a mile from the Tissaran N.S. in Clonooney, Belmont, Offaly. It was erected in 1509, and was the residence of the heir apparent to the prince of the district. In a quarrel, the heir presumptive was killed by the shot of a ball from this castle in 1519. In 1553, there was a quarrel between the Mac Coghlans and the descendants of Farrell and O' Molloy. A peasant entered the castle, slew three warders with an axe, tied a woman and then took possession of the castle.(continues on next page)- Collector
