  1. On the left bank of the Shannon opposite Clonmacnois school is situated the ruins of De Lacey’s Castle. History tells us that this castle was built by the son of Hugh De Lacey in (1210.) and was afterwards inhabited by John De Gray Bishop of Norwich. The Annals of Clonmacnois tells us that it was built for the purpose of keeping back intruders, for in (1135) there was a wooden-bridge over the river opposite where the castle now stands. There was a channel all round the castle so in case of attack the draw-bridge could be
