In former times children began to wear boots at about ten years old. There were some people who never wore boots especially women except to Mass on Sunday. Children go bare-footed in Summer now. The water used for washing the feet is thrown out. It is a belief in this district that if you did not throw out the water someone would call you during the night to throw out the water. Boots are not made in this district but there are repaired by Mr. John Spollen of Ballyhin and by Mr. James Guinan and Mr. William Guinan of Corr and Mr. John Charles Egan of Kilnagarna. It has been a tradition in their families. In olden times boots were made by hand and now they are made by machinery in factories and can be sold cheaper. Clogs were worn in this district one year the time of the Great War because boots were prohibitive prices. No kind of foot-covering was ever worn except Leather and rubber boots. Leather was never made in this district.
