- In the townsland of Ballinaminton there is a cranes' grove. There are only four cranes' groves in Ireland. One of them is in Ballinaminton. A crane is a big grey bird like a goose. This bird lives on fish. Oftentimes a half-dozen of them is seen passing our house going down to our river. When he reaches the river, he settles down on a stone in shallow water. When the fish come, they begin to bite his feet because his feet look like worms. Often he has a fight with an eel. He carries the fish in his bill to his grove.
He builds his nest on the top of a tree. The bird is so big and clumsy he has to leave two holes for his feet when he is building. The cock bird feeds the hen. She lays two eggs.
The cock bird feeds the young. Then he teaches them how to fly. Then he flies to the river and calls the young.
- A great many wild birds are to be seen about this district. The most common are partridges, wood-pigeons and pheasants. The partridges hatch on the ground. They lay about fourteen eggs. They(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
