  1. A bastable was a pot oven with three legs. A grid-iron was iron bars put on the fire and bread was put on it.
    A potato cake was cooked potatoes mashed up in flour and put on the pan. A quern was a stone with a hole in it and the oats was put in it, and crushed up. There are no querns in my district. The flour was usually mixed with water.
