    The Famine Period
When the famine visited this parish first all the potatoes began to rot in the ground. They rotted on everybody except one man and he had just one load of potatoes left. His name was Mr. Heaton. He lived in the house that Mr. Minnock of Clonshanny owns now. The people began to die of hunger. This man spread his potatoes flat on the ground the way that the people would not get them. He covered them with clay.
The people used to sow their potatoes in flat pieces of land like ridges and they were called trenches.
