Then the cake was put down and when done was left on a plate and lots of butter left on it to melt into it. I often ate them. They are very nice. We often make them.

  2. Bread

The flour of long ago was pollard...

The flour of long ago was pollard. It was very scarce. They used to bake bread in an iron pot. The old people used to put a cross on the cake to keep the crust even.
The bread was often baked on a griddle near the fire. More of it used to be baked on a piece of metal.
