  1. A story is told in the Brideswell district, Parish of Kilrush, Co. Wexford, of a man named Doyle who worked with a farmer named Barker. He was coming home along the level road. It was late at night and the moon was shining. He met a very large black dog. He had heard of this animal having been seen before, and he knew that it was not an ordinary dog. The animal came out from behind the ditch and walked close to the ditch.
The man made the sign of the Cross and prepared himself to meet and pass the animal. When it was drawing near him it stopped and stared at him. He bade it to begone. It stood for a short space of time and then it disappeared. He did not see where it went to.
