  1. Local Marriage Customs. March 7th, 1938.
Marriages take place at every period of the year but not during Lent or Advent. Sometimes marriages take place on Shrove Tuesday. May is an unlucky month for marriages. Monday for health, Tuesday for wealth, Wednesday the best day of all, Thursday for presents, Friday for sorrow and Saturday no day at all. Matches were not made in my district. Money is not given as dowry. Stock and goods are given. People don't remember marriages taking place in the houses. A wedding feast is held in the homes. A wedding procession or "hauling home" is not held. Those attending the wedding did not race against each other on horses on the way home.
    Mary Doyle, Ballyrea, Wells, Gorey.
