  1. The following old prayer was taught to Miss O'Connor when a child, by her nurse Julia Bolger:
    As I looked up as I looked down
    I saw the B.V.M. and seven Mass Books in her hand
    Seven priests singing and seven candles lighting
    Open the gates of Heaven and shut the gates of Hell
    Let all the suffering souls enter in
    For evermore. Amen
    And another;
    I lay my body down to sleep
    To God I give my soul to keep
    To sleep now sleep never
    To God I give my soul forever
    If death come to-night to me
    Lord Jesus waken me
