Baskets Baskets are made out of sally-switches. First a fairly thick switch is got and formed like a ring. Then four ribs are nailed to this and the weak rods are woven through these and so a basket is made
Brooms Brigid Butler of Blackwater made brooms out of heath got on the Ballina hills. She twisted a bunch of heath and sold them at a penny each
Cooper Owen Murphy of Blackwater was the local churn and barrel-mender
Shoe-making Boots were made out of kip sewn in such a way as to form the upper of a boot. The welt was then sewed to the upper. The insole and the outer sole and welt were then sewed or pegged together. The heel was formed by pieces of leather cut in heel shape. The shoe-makers of this parish were John Bolger and Jim Roche of Blackwater Arthur Howlin of Ballina and John Murphy of Ballineskar, of these only John Murphy is yet alive, he only mends boots now.
