  1. The favourite bread years ago was wheaten bread. It was made like this : First the wheaten-meal was put in a bowl, then salt and bread-soda was added. and it was stirred well. Butter-milk was then added, and it was stirred again. It was then kneaded and shaped round or square.
    In later ages they began to mix it with water. The bread mixed with water was called "Blessed bread." This is why :
    There was a poor widow with a large family of hungry children who found it hard to provide for them. On one occasion the parish priest paid her a visit,
