  1. After the insurgents had been defeated any leaders that were not killed had to fly out of the country. While Mr Bagnal Harvey was in hiding a faithful servant of his named Devereux was taken by the soldiers. They tortured him to get him to tell where his master was hiding. They took him to a barn and tied him up by the feet to a beam which ran across the middle of it.
    At first, when the poor man was hanging there helplessly they set a wicked dog at him to tear him. When they were tired of this they took the dog away and stuck spears in him. Still he would not inform on his master. At last they lighted a fire under him so that the flames just reached his body. Then they closed the door and went away and left the poor man to die in agony.
