- Sir Walter was to be married to Lady Devereux at Ballymaghyre. Lady Devereux asked Sir Walter to get some rabbits for the wedding. He would not anyone only himself so out he went to the burrows and he hunted all day but never a rabbit could he catch. Returning home at night quite disappointed what should he see but a white cat perched on a bank of sand. "Bad luck to you, and all your breed" said the knight, taking up a stone. "It's you and the likes of you that have destroyed all my rabbits" and so saying he flung the stone and killed the cat. When he reached home, he found as usual the old cat sitting at the fire. "Maude killed Jude" he said in Barony of Forth language, which means "Cat, I killed your kitten", and scarcely had he said the word than she curled up her back sprang upon the knight and before anyone could save him she had his throat cut.(continues on next page)
