  1. In olden times the people used to make their own candles, out of Pork fat and Tallow. They used to buy the Tallow from the Victualler, and they got the porkfat when they killed their own pigs.
    This was put in a pot on the fire and rendered. Cotton wicks were placed over some short bits of sticks which were supported over a tub. The double wicks were placed over the sticks and dipped in the melted grease until the candles were of the proper thickness.
