    to have great games of cards and used not go home until twelve o'clock so this night a card fell to the ground and a man stooped to pick up the card and the man stooped to he saw the devil's feet and he blessed himself and as he did the devil vanished through a hole in the wall. Nobody could live in the house after as somebody was always seen in it.

  2. There are only three holy wells in this district of any account, St John's St Kevin's and St Mogues. St John's well is situated in Ballyowen. It is very nicely situated and it never goes dry.
    Long ago there used to be bonfires lighting on Curries Hill which is right over the well on St John's night. Mr Corish or his family never used any water out of the well, but the people who are there now do.
    St Kevin's is situate in Kilcarven about two hundred yards from the graveyard. People visit it on the Pattern day whch falls on the 11th of June or if not the nearest Sunday to it. Father Doyle of Maudlintown blessed it and he built a statue at the back of it and put a white railing around it
