  1. About 100 years ago people used to attend Hedge Schools. The Hedge School was uaually held in a barn in this neighbourhood.
    One of the teachers was a Mrs Coughlan and she lived latterly in Wenneytown Duncormack known by the local people as the Finours. A man named John French of Johnstown has her place now.
    The old School in Carrig is still to be seen quite near the old School in Danescastle.
    A Mr Murphy taught there with his daughter a Mrs Nolan. A Miss English of Dublin also taught there after her time.
    Mr Murphy had a teacher's residence beside the school.
    PAYMENT.
    The children had to pay their teacher every quarter for their schooling i e those children whose parents were able to do so.
    Subjects
    All Subjects Such as are taught today with the exception of Irish were on the programme of Instruction
    Algebra was taught as an extra Subject for which a Separate payment has too be given.
    A boy from Battlestown near Ballycullane used to come to Carrig School to learn algebra. He was to
