  1. No. 54. Legend connected with Clonmines Abbey
A local legend says that when Cromwell's soldiers were marching on Clonmines, the Priests took the sacred vessels and all threasure across in a boat to the other side of the river & buried them in McGrath's marsh. The spot where they lie buried has never been known to be wet in the rainiest seasons. And moreover, the oldest inhabitant says that even in snowstorms this spot remains intact from snow. The spot naturally is held in great reverence by the local people.
A life was lost there many years ago by people who started digging for the treasure.

A Blessed well in the "fork" of a tree
In the Northern end of this parish there is a blessed well most marvellously situated in the 'fork' of atree. It never goes dry though there is no visible source of supply. It is said locally that it was blessed some hundred years ago by one of the Augustinians, a fugitive from Cromwell, when his hordes attached Clonmines.
