Mr Swift aged 80 years, of Bracket Gates, Rathowen County Westmeath, told me that when he was a little boy, there were gates across the road in front of his house.

Mr Swift aged 80 years, of Bracket Gates, Rathowen County Westmeath, told me that when he was a little boy, there were gates across the road in front of his house.
They were tall gates and they were known as the "Bracket Gates" and when the horse coaches used to be going to Dublin, the owner of the coach used to have to pay a toll there of about 2/6 and the horses were changed there also.
When the buses and trains were invented, the gates were taken away and there is no trace of them now, and the townsland around it is known as the "Bracket Gates".
