- Long ago there was oaten, wheaten, and barley bread made. Before mills were made their were querns in use almost in every house. The vessels used for were griddles. This was how oaten bread was made. First there is oaten meal got and It is wet with milk or water. Next it is baked. Barley and wheaten bread are made the same way.
