  1. Long ago there was an old school in the centre of Fihora. My grandfather was at this school. The school was a little house out in a field near the Fihora road. It was a master that was teaching in this school. He was Master Hourican that was teaching in it. The teacher had a house of his own to stay in. The scholars had to pay the teacher every Monday. They were taught partly in English, and partly in Irish. They had spelling books. They used to have to write on slates and they used to have quills for pens. They had stones placed round the school walls and they sat on them and they had big slates for black boards.
