  1. There was a hedge-school in this district. It was in a barn of John Murphy, Leggah, Moyne, County Longford. The man who taught in this school was not a stranger. He belonged to this district. His name was Kiernan.
    In some places school was carried on in farmers houses. Teachers lodged in those houses. The teacher got five shillings a quarter from each pupil. Those teachers taught English Geography and Mathematics. Irish was not taught by masters nor it was not ta spoken by the pupils.
    The Universal Spelling was used. The boys sat on planks left on stones around the walls. The teachers were called Poor Scholars. They wrote with quills and slates.
