  1. During the Anglo-Irish war he commanded the North Longford Flying Column. On the night that Granard was burned by the Crown Forces in 1920 he led a successful attack on ten lorry loads of Auxiliaries and Black and Tans, numbering about two hundred, in the village of Ballinalee where they had halted on their return from Granard with the intention of performing a similiar operation there. His bravery that night saved Ballinalee. The enemy forces suffered considerable casualties and beat a retreat in all directions. Three days previously he had, singlehanded, repelled an attack of Crown Forces when an attempt was made to surround and capture him. He escaped with a bullet hole through his coat-collar
