- The people of this district suffered a lot during the famine or the failure of the potato crop in 1846-7. There was a great many deaths around here.
The failure was that they were very tiny and consequently not worth digging but those that were left decayed in the ground.
Some people were fortunate enough to save some of them until the following year and they grew to an enormous size.
The people used to eat tops of turnips boiled in gruel.- Collector
