There is one industry carried on here in Aughnashannagh. It is basket making. This industry is going on here for a great many years.
The name of the man who makes them is Barney Hoey. But there were more people who carried out this industry years ago, and Mr Hoey is the only one left. If any person here wants a creel or basket made they go to him. This man is a very good basket maker.
When he is making a basket he gets some willow rods. First of all he puts four strong rods standing in the ground in a square, then he plaits the lighter ones in and out through them until it is about two & a half feet high, then he plaits a square bottom in it. I have seen him make a basket.
There were other people who used to make rush candles long ago.
