About three miles from here there is a townland called Creaghlaghta where there was an altar cut out of the trunk of a tree. There was also a hole made in this rude altar which served as a holy-water fount. It was a big oak tree and it is still to be seen. There is a fort near it which in olden times was called "The Black Fort". Here in this quiet place Mass was celebrated in the Penal Days. Mass was not said very often as the priest was hunted from place to place.
