- Fifty years ago there were no creameries in my district, so the people had to churn the milk at home, make the butter and bring it to the market to sell.
The milk after been taken from the cow was put into shallow wooden vessels called pails, or in earthenware crocks and allowed to remain in them until all the cream had collected on top. When it was ripe for churning the tops of the crocks and pails were skimmed off and put into the churn. The most common churn used them was the plunge churn and churning was very heavy work for members of the family.
Some large farmers had a machine churn, and they did the work with an ass or horse.
