  1. The great famine of forty six and forty seven caused hundreds of deaths every month, though this county was not too bad. Leitrim and Roscommon were very poor.
    People had to go to Drogheda for meal, some of them had to go riding a donkey, and others went on horse and cart, and on their way back, women and children used to follow the carts, and if any of the meal happened to scatter they would lick it up off the ground.
    The farmer's crops were rich enough that year, but they sold their oats and wheat to pay their rents and rates.
