  1. Churning long ago was done by means of a "plunge churn".
    It got its name because of the dash being plunged down into the milk.
    This churn was a large barrel with a lid and a circular hole in the lid through which the handle of the dash passed.
    The dash consisted of a long handle and a circular head, this head had, sometimes, a few holes in it.
    When the churning was in progress all the family joined in, and took their turn at the dash.
    People long ago believed that the butter could be taken away from them and they believed this could be done
