  1. The candles used long ago were far different from what they are now.
    There were three sorts of candles:- resin candles, rush candles and dip candles.
    The dip candles were most common used in my district and all the candles were home made.
    In order to make dip candles the women used to get cords and cut them into the lengths required. They they got a grisset and melted fat in it.
    When it was melted they got the cords and pulled them through the grisset and left them down on flags to cool.
    This they did with everyone
