On the eight of September eighteen hundred and ninety eight, just one hundred years after the battle of Ballinamuck, a monster meeting was held on the Battlefield to honour the Irish heroes who fell on that occasion. A Miss Byrne a native of Cornakelly, on the eve of her departure for America composed the following song about the meeting.

    Ye sons of Erin's lovely Isle.
    The land of Saint Patrick blessed,
    Why do you leave it to the spoil,
    Of Tyrants who opress,
    They wronged your fathers long ago,
    They wrong you now why wait,
    Your father's blood for nights did flow,
    In seventeen ninety eight.
