- The Blacksmith who carried on his trade at Moyne Cross Roads was Phil Newman. There were four generations of the Newman family engaged at the trade in turn. Newman was an all round Smith. He repaired ploughs, made gates, shod horses, made "loy"irons ie (the implement used for digging in this district was called a "loy". It consisted of two parts - the tree and the iron. The loy tree was shaped out of ash with a step on it for the boot called the "Preab." The iron was made by the blacksmith and consisted of the blade and the body. On the body there were two wings and when the wood of the tree was driven between the wings the iron kept a firm grip on the wood).
Newman excelled at horse-shoeing and making "loy" irons. Very seldom he used coal on the heart. He used to get hard black turf. Set fire to them and when they were half burned, he threw water on them and then covered them with mud or earth. When he took them out of the pit he used them just as the present day blacksmith uses coal.
He made almost all the farm implements(continues on next page)
