“Wrestling was a very common game in this district long ago.”
(continued from previous page)as a weapon. Her husband a man named Sheeran fought on the other side.- SHINTY
The game of shinty played in this district was akin to the Scotch game of shinty.
The ball was always struck on the ground and the hurleys were not neccessarily broad in the blade as the modern Gaelic hurley is.
A game somewhat like shinty was played in the North of Ireland in the Eighteenth century. The people of this district are for the most part descendants of people who came from the North during this century and they brought the game with them.
