  1. The Old House
    The old houses in which most of the people lived fifty years ago, were much inferior to present-day dwellings. They were thatched and mud-walled. The floors were also made of mud that is a sort of brick-clay. It was mixed with straw and, with spades and shovels, mixed into a stiff mortar. The walls, near three feet thick, were raised about one foot at a time, to a height of about seven feet. They were firmly fixed by an additional course of mud and
