    Then he said. "Move that flag and you will get it all. The man set to move the flag and between moving the flag with one hand and holding the leprechaun as well as steady himself with the other hand that he was almost exhausted when at last he got the flag shifted. Underneath to his great joy he saw not a crock of gold but a pile of glittering gold sovereigns. In his joy of seeing his dreams at last realized he released his hold on the leprechaun and threw his weight downward on his hoard. He remembered nothing more after this. When he came to the sun was shining high in the sky. The man could not gather his thoughts for a short time; then he remembered. With a shout of joy he clutched at the pile of sovereigns like a miser who had lost all for a short time and regained it.
    There was no welcome jingle in the "gold coins" that he grabbed in his two hands; they were merely leaves of Autumn that had fallen and sheltered there for a long time.
    The leprechaun had humbugged again. He was a sadder and wiser man that went home that day. The lesson was good for him for afterwards he settled to his ordinary work and so steady did he become that in some years after he was one of the richest men in the district.
