The vessels used before cups became common were called "noggins", and they were made out of wood. They were made in the form of a sugar bowl, with big handles out of them like a cup.

  2. King Harman was the landlord in my district. He had his residence at Newcastle six miles outside Ballymahon. He had agents for collecting the rent. The agent in my district was called Bowles. The rent at that time was very heavy and some people were unable to pay it. The people that did not pay it were driven from their homes. There were a few
