starch was to be found in the bottom of the basin. It took a while to sink to the bottom of the basin. This starch became hard. Then the water was thrown away and fresh water was poured on the starch to clean it. After an hour or two this water was thrown away and more water was added. After a few rounds of this treatment the starch was pure, white, and hard and was kept until required.
