    On or about the year of 1830 a Hedge school master came to Maughana big Armagh Ballykeeva, Athlone) tot rach school. His house was composed of mud walls and thatched with leather. Each of the pupils brought a sod of turf every morning and one penny each week, also potatoes to help to support him. He taught all his pupils to read and write, and that was about all he taught them.
    As he was reek foot one of his pupils - William Farrell write a poem about him.
