    in ridges and there was a space left between each ridge and this space is called a furrow.
    Long ago the people made their own spades but now they buy them in the shop.
    In former times people helped one another in the sowing of potatoes, and now the people employ men and pay them for doing the work.
    First of all the potatoes are cut in pieces called scalpes, then they put lime on them, and leave there for three or four days before they are sown.
    The potatoes are then sown in drills and when the potatoes are about three feet above the clay they are sprayed.
