  1. We have not heard of any hedge schools in this district. The school we attend at present was built in 1870. Before that there was an old school about a quarter of a mile down the road.
The teachers were not local people but lodged in the district.
Every pupil paid one penny a week School fees and the parents also sent presents of butter, potatoes, bacon to the teachers.
English was spoken by teachers and pupils and writing was very well taught as some beautiful specimens of penmanship are met with in old school books.
Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
