  1. Richard Mc Geoghegan was a very brave chieftain who lived in this county about three hundred years ago. He fought many battles against the English.On one occasion Hugh de Lacy came with his soldiers from his castle in Horseleap demanding his lands and possessions. Mc Geoghegan single handed attacked him and his onslaught was so furious, De Lacy followed by his soldiers fled to Horseleap and he was in such a hurry to get into his castle he did not wait for the drawbridge to be let down but he jumped his horse over the chasm and the marks of the horse's hooves are still to be seen.
    Some years ago a man named Patrick Lynagh, Ballinamill, Streamstown was known to be one of the best wrestlers in this district. It was never known for him to be thrown. John Mullally, Loughnavalley was another great wrestler. He challenged Patrick Lynagh at Skeagh hill, and after twenty minutes wrestling, Lynagh succeeded in throwing Mullally. Joseph Dalton ,Garthy, Co. Westmeath who is now eighty years of age was a famous wrestler in his young days. Brian Glynn, Kippenduff, was another great wrestler.
