- (continued from previous page)hopper or box at the top and the handle was turned and the stones turned and the oats dribbled down between the stones and was ground into meal. It would be sifted with an oatmeal seive then and the seeds were separated from the meal.
Joe Quinn Clonfad has two stones still that were used for that purpose - quern stones - they were called.
The meal was made into bread and stirabout and the seeds into flummery.
They used to strain the flummery with a straw strainer - a wisp of straw.
