  1. By the flowery banks of Inny the burning sunset fell.
    In many a stream and golden gleam, on hill and mead and dell,
    And from thy shores, bright Ennal,
    to the far off mountain crest,
    O'er plain and leafy wildwood
    there was peace and quiet rest.
    Oh! sunset is the sweetest of all the hours that be,
    For musing lone, or tale of love,
    by glen or forest tree;
    But its radiance bringeth saddening thoughts to him whose good right hand
    must guard his life in the
    comming strife, 'gainst the foe of his fatherland;
    For he knows when thinking
    lonely by his small tent on
    the plain.
    The glories of the sinking sun
    he ne'er may see again.
