  1. In olden times in the district marriages invariably took place during shrovelide.
    Nowadays marriages seldom take place and June is the favorite month.
    May is considered the most unlucky month and "Saturday the worst day of all"
    The local saying is :
    "Marry in May and you will rue the day"
    "Monday for health"
    Tuesday, for wealth
    Wednesday, the best day of all
    Thursday, for crosses
    Friday, for loses and
    Saturday, no luck at all"
    Another saying is :
    "Saturday fleeting makes a short sitting"
    Matches are seldom made now in this district but were very conmen.
    until late years and money is still given as dowry. Land or stock is sometimes given.
    In olden times marriages usually took place late in the evenings. The bride invited her own friends and neighbors and they went on side cars to her parents."
