  1. The old people of this locality long ago had several beautiful prayers which did not appear in prayerbooks or the prayer leaflets. Old people generally repeated the following prayer and made the children repeat it after them before going to bed.
As I lie down on my right side to sleep
I pray to God to be my guide if any evil appears to me
Put down thy Holy Hand and cover me
There are four corners on my bed
There are four angels o'er spread
    Matthew Mark Luke and John
God bless this bed that I lie on
And if I die before I wake
I pray to God my soul to take Amen.
Jesus this hour I give to thee
    For the past pardon me
I know that I will soon depart
O Hide me in thy Sacred Heart
