  1. The names of some of these teachers or poor scholars that went about were Daly, Curran, Campell and Gannon. The subjects taught were reading and writing and a study of what was known as the universal spelling book.

  2. About a hundred and twenty year ago there was a hedge schoolmaster known as Mat Gavisk. He used to go around and making arrangements with the parents of the children where he would meet them, he would spend about two hours teaching.
    Nobody knows where he came from but Gavisk family are living in Craddenstown yet.
