  1. Balllinlough is an ancient old castle. It was remodelled in the sixteenth century the date of its remodeling and the hand and dagger and the Breffeny crest are over the hall door as the O'Reillys of Breffney formerly lived there and were near related to Miles the Slasher.
When Cromwell arrived in Ballinlough O'Reilly hid and Cromwell stopped the night in the castle and when Cromwell was going next morning he gave Ballinlough over to one of his officers. When O'Reilly got Cromwell and his army gone he came out to the officer with the sword in his right hand and the keys in his left hand and challenged Cromwell's officer to fight him for the keys the officer was a coward and galloped after Cromwell and wanted to bring him back with his army again. Cromwell refused and told him that O'Reilly was a soldier and when he was let him have Ballinlough and he said to his officer you are a coward and when you are do without Ballinlough and then Cromwell hanged the officer for being a coward and some say that the ash tree got the name of the "hangmans tree".
